CACCIA ALLE FOCHE IN CANADA
In data 29 marzo, il Ministro canadese delle industrie della pesca e degli oceani ha ufficializzato la nuova quota di foche che saranno uccise: 270.000. Di queste, circa 78.000 foche sono nel Golfo di San Lorenzo, le restanti in aree remote della costa orientale del Canada. Il governo canadese ha sensibilmente abbassato il tetto massimo delle foche che potranno essere cacciate: da 335,000 nel 2006 a 270,000 nel 2007, un calo deciso dal ministro della Pesca Loyola Hearn “per via dello scioglimento dei ghiacci nelle zone interessate dalla caccia”. Migliaia di cuccioli di foca sono morti annegati nel corso delle ultime settimane. In base alle valutazioni di HSUS circa 250.000 cuccioli rischiano di morire in questo modo. Quest’anno le condizioni del ghiaccio sono le peggiori che la storia abbia mai registrato, hanno superato quelle dell’anno scorso. Nel Golfo di St. Lawrence, il Global Warming ha creato un disastro ecologico di proporzioni monumentali. Con oltre un milione di foche uccise nel corso dell’ultimo triennio, la caccia alle foche in Canada è il più grande massacro di mammiferi marini al mondo. Thank you for your correspondence regarding the Atlantic Canada seal hunt. We hope that the following will serve to address your concerns.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) makes every effort to ensure that seals are hunted as quickly, effectively, and humanely as possible. Enforcement of the regulations is thorough and comprehensive, specifically ensuring adherence to catch requirements, licence conditions, and humane harvesting practices. Penalties are tough and could include court-imposed fines, and orders to forfeit catches, gear, boats and licences.
The harp seal population is a healthy marine resource that can easily support a responsible harvest; there is no conservation reason to end the hunt. A survey conducted in 2004 estimated the harp seal population at 5.82 million animals; approximately three times the population of less than two million in the 1970s.
Because the continued health and abundance of the herd is the department’s main priority, DFO sets quotas for harp seals to ensure that the resource remains sustainable. Management measures have been developed for 2006-2010, and a new multi-year plan will be available shortly. A number of conservation groups agree that a regulated and responsible harvest of the seal herd is appropriate, provided it is sustainable in the long-term from a conservation perspective. As you may know, the hunt of harp (whitecoat) and hooded (blueback) seal pups has been banned in Canada since 1987. Regulations also prohibit the trade, sale, or barter of the fur of these pups.
The value of the seal hunt may appear negligible to some individuals, but it is tremendously valuable to those individuals who use it as their employment during a time when economic opportunities are limited in many remote, coastal communities. Some sealers have stated that their income from sealing can represent up to 35% of their total annual income. Also, the top homeports for sealers have unemployment rates that are in excess of 30% higher than the national average. Sealing
and fishing are also time-honoured traditions that allow people to provide for their families through knowledge of the marine environment and hard work. Sébastien Mineault

April 10 povero coniglietto della Lindt!Non so come ma oggi, solo oggi mi sono ricordata che avevo un coniglietto della Lindt al cioccolato comprato nel 2002 che non avevo voluto mangiare perchè a me gli animali anche se di cioccolata mi fa impressione mangiarli.
In realtà mi ero già messa al letto impigiamata poi non riuscendo a prender sonno ho fatto: "Ma quel coniglietto della Lindt di quattro anni fa come starà infondo alla libreria?"
Mi sono alzata e l'ho cercato!
ORRORE! ai tarli il coniglietto di cioccolata non ha fatto impressione... non hanno fatto complimenti e si sono mangiati anche il collarino rosso con il campanellino...
